How walking became one of my greatest QOL additions

Walking is amazing. When we walk we enter optical flow—a state of mild euphoria and pain sedation as the world goes by us.

Taking steps can be a perfect level of exercise where the body regenerates energy as fast as it's spent, keeping energy levels at 100% even over long distances.

These tactics transformed walking from something naturally amazing to something so great I have racked up a large number of 20+ mile days.

  1. Looking left and right when walking. Enjoying surroundings and noticing all the little changes, signs, flowers, open and closed doors, does wonders for my happiness. Frequently I spend more time looking up than straight ahead.

  2. Walking down the middle of the road, taking the best path. If someone else submits a claim to the path, share with them.

  3. Nodding at people. Acknowledge how many people share the present moment. Notice the dog walkers, the unhoused folks, and the guy watering his plants on the balcony above, and pass along a smile or a nod. I've found this small added experience makes for a more loving and connected world. It's marvelous how many people are happy to see you.

  4. Stopping to help. Whether it’s an old woman trying to get a cart up a step or a delivery guy carrying a bit too much, it has always made both of our days to stop and take things in together. Lending a hand does wonders for your connection to humanity.

  5. Carrying water and taking small sips keeps my body in flow.

  6. Adding other senses. Stop and smell flowers. Walk with a friend or call a friend and talk on the phone. Notice how the ground vibrates when a trolley goes by.
